2011 Nissan Leaf

Nissan has pledged that it will fulfill all Leaf pre-orders in the U.S. by the end of September. Brian Carolin, Nissan's senior vice president for sales and marketing for North America, told reporters that production of the Leaf is quickly ramping up, promising:
We're going to make sure that customers get their cars well before the end of summer. I'm confident during April, May you're going to see (a) significant number of deliveries.
Although 20,000 pre-orders have been placed, Carolin notes that only four out of every ten who have plunked down the $99 deposit have been buying the Leaf when the time comes to make a firm commitment. Carolin predicts that "a few hundred" Leafs will be sold in February, followed by "thousands" in March. However, Nissan's VP of sales openly admits that delivery of 20,000 Leafs to U.S. buyers by year's end is unlikely. As Carolin stated:
I think 20,000 will be too high. You just have to make this launch absolutely perfect. It's not a numbers game.

Smart in North America

Smart in North America
[edit] Canada
The Smart Fortwo

The Smart Fortwo was introduced in Canada in late 2004 and was sold through Mercedes-Benz dealers. Demand has been heavy with up to 6-month waiting lists in major urban areas in the spring of 2005. The vehicle has been especially popular for light errand running for small shops and businesses, with many carrying custom paint jobs or stick-on graphics boldly advertising the associated product or service. However, recently the demand seems to have tapered off,[citation needed] and some 2005 Smart Fortwos have popped up in the used car market. Canadian Smart CDIs cannot be registered in some states in the US.

As of June 1, 2007, 9,200 Smart Fortwo CDIs had been sold in Canada, and as of the end of the model 450 production run, 10,239 of these cars were in this country. This large stock is because as the model 450 ended production, after a run of 770,256 cars, Mercedes-Benz Canada built-up stock to tide dealers over until the successor model 450 arrived at the end of 2007.

The Canadian version of the Smart Fortwo cdi sold to 915 customers over three months in 2004; 4080 were sold in 2005; and 3023 in 2006. Virtually all the deliveries in 2004 and many of the deliveries in 2005 were to long-time Smart fans who had been waiting for their car for years, which largely accounts for the higher numbers. Although sales tapered off in late 2006 and the first couple of months of 2007, they rebounded strongly in March 2007 and this trend continued through April, culminating with May 2007, marking the car's strongest sales performance ever in Canada, at well over 500 units. Sales are strongest (per capita) in Western Canada, with Vancouver Island and Vancouver being especially hot markets for Smart.

The 2007 (Europe) and 2008 (North America) Smart Fortwo 451 saw an engine displacement increase to 1 full litre up from 700 cc with the attendant loss of fuel economy. Sales of the diesel engine was restricted in certain markets in favor of the Mitsubishi gasoline unit. Currently, in North America, Smarts are sold with the larger gas engine in the US and Canada, with the smaller, more fuel efficient diesel being sold in Mexico, Europe and other World markets.
[edit] United States
Smart Fortwo (2nd generation) parked in downtown Washington, D.C.

Before 2008, Smart cars were only available in the United States as "grey market" imports, such as ZAP. U.S. federal regulations allow certain grey market importing in large quantities provided the vehicles are modified and tested to conform to U.S. safety and emissions regulations. Smart cars were imported into the United States by "The Defiance Company LLC", modified by G&K Automotive Conversion in Santa Ana, California, and distributed and sold by independent dealerships which were not affiliated with Mercedes. U.S. regulations did not permit the purchase and import of used Smart CDi vehicles from Canada, as the diesel powered Canadian Smarts did not meet American emissions regulations.

In June 2006, DaimlerChrysler confirmed that Smart would be officially launched in the United States in the first quarter of 2008. The cars are offered through a dealership holding company Penske Automotive Group, which created a new U.S. dealership network for the brand under the name Smart USA.[30] Initially, an updated gasoline powered Fortwo was offered, starting around US$12,000.[31] The new model made its debut at European auto shows in November 2006.

"Hybrid Technologies" plans to sell an electric version of the Smart vehicle in the U.S. starting at US$35,000. It is being called a hybrid car even though the vehicle is all-electric. The electric Smart car will have a range of 120 to 150 miles (190–240 km), a top speed of 80 mph (130 km/h), and charge in 5 to 6 hours using a standard 110 V AC outlet. An electric Smart is currently undergoing testing in the UK and will only be offered to commercial clients as a trial for the time being.[32][33]

A Forbes article has been critical of the stated reasons that Daimler-Chrysler gave for introducing the car in the United States.[34] The Smart fortwo is the most fuel-efficient gasoline-engined car for sale in the US; however, according to the EPA, the Smart's fuel efficiency is lower than the fuel efficiency of some hybrids such as the Ford Fusion hybrid Toyota Prius, the Honda Civic Hybrid, and the 2-seat Honda Insight (making it the fourth most fuel efficient vehicle in the U.S.), which achieve 45/48, 45/40, and 61/70 respectively while the Smart achieves 33 city and 41 highway, though the Smart fortwo, which is not a hybrid, costs about half as much as a hybrid in the US.

The unique design of the Smart has received much attention in the U.S. In its April 2008 issue, Men's Vogue raised the question: in a nation where your supersized car is your castle, is the Smart too mini for a man?[35]

To obtain a Smart requires obtaining a "reservation" costing $99 through a dealer or over the internet. The waiting time in January 2009 was approximately 12 months, however as of July 2009 there was no wait to obtain a vehicle and dealers have them in stock for immediate delivery.

On January 25, 2010 smart USA began its first lease program in the US market for smart fortwo models.[36] The program was scheduled to last through February 28, 2010.

Smart USA , has appointed its first dealer in Puerto Rico. The company said that the new dealer will be located at Avenida 65th de Infanteria Km 5.9, San Juan, Puerto Rico 00929 and is part of the Penske Automotive Group. It will also be a part of Triangle Automotive Group, an automotive retailer in Puerto Rico.[37]
[edit] Mexico

Smart offers the hardtop and convertible models of the Fortwo coupé in Mexico.[38]

The Smart cars were first introduced to the country in 2003, and were sold in department stores Sanborns and Liverpool. Later Mercedes Benz dealers started to offer the car ,which although very attractive to the public was considered very expensive and was seen as a toy car only for young people.[citation needed]

Currently Smart cars are still offered in the country but with little acceptance, with only the Fortwo model available.

Smart cars have fierce competition with the Hyundai Atos, Pontiac Matiz, and Chevrolet Chevy, which are compacts with low gas consumption at less than half the cost of a Smart Car but with more space for passengers.
[edit] Smart in Australia

Since 2003 Smart has been for sale in Australia. All Smart models that have been produced have been sold in Australia. The Smart is currently sold through Mercedes-Benz Dealerships. Recently Smart has become popular among young people in urban areas of Australia, particularly in its largest cities.
[edit] Safety
Cutaway showing structure of the Smart

Smart vehicles use a very small front crumple zone. The new Smart Fortwo has been awarded 4 out of 5 stars in the Euro NCAP Adult Occupant Protection, 2 out of 4 stars in the Pedestrian protection test but it was not tested for Child Occupant Protection as it has no rear seats.[39] The original Smart was awarded 3 out of 5 stars for Adult Occupant Protection.[40] In American tests using a five star rating, Smart cars received a four star safety rating for the driver from a front impact, and a five star safety rating for the driver for a side impact.[41] It also received "Good" ratings (top rating) for front and side crash protection in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests.[42] However, in an April 2009 40 mph frontal offset crash test between a Fortwo and a Mercedes C class, the IIHS rated the Smart Fortwo "Poor," noting that "Multiple injuries, including to the head, would be likely for a real-world driver of a Smart in a similar collision."[43]

The main structure of the car is a stiff structure called a Tridion Safety Cell, which is designed to activate the crumple zones of a colliding vehicle. This design creates a very strong safety cell around the passengers.[44]
[edit] Modification

Smart cars have been modified by Brabus of Germany, resulting in Brabus production models. Other companies modify the Smart to use motorcycle engines, such as the Suzuki Hayabusa 1340 cc inline four-cylinder. These cars are known as Smartuki[citation needed]. The most powerful models can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in less than 3.5 seconds.[citation needed]

Some companies and individuals upgrade the original engine to Brabus spec, but these have been taken even further by some with many aftermarket upgrade options available.

2010 Dodge Journey
The Dodge Journey is the midsize SUV class for 2009 and offers families an alternative to the minivan. Click here to see more pictures of the Dodge Journey 2010th

Many parents who offered to find a space and functionality in a minibus crash their noses in the idea of driving a pair. When the elbow crossover SUV on the disc to mini-van to the institution par excellence of the modern family, a large number of new entries are responsible for providing lists of characteristics are attractive to parents and children: three rows of seats, DVD entertainment, shops, height - in booster seats, and underground storage tanks, to name a few. A mid-size SUV seems to be better than others have done: the Dodge Journey.

Leader in the Chrysler minivan and the king, if you have to develop innovative, family, user-friendly features, the same logic in his Dodge Journey mid-size SUV. Introduced in 2009, the front and Journey drive is available with a 4-cylinder, V6 or 4-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, respectively. The combination of aggressive pricing, creative use of space and the list of options to put the clothes from their competitors in this very large and competitive class.

Consumer Guide has recently tested a high-end-2010 Journey R / T with the 235 hp 3.5-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic transmission AWD. With a base price of $ 28,195, was equipped with standard features like dual-zone automatic control climate, leather upholstery with leather steering wheel, heated front seats engine starting wheel remote audio controls, 6 seats electric driver lumbar adjustment, not flat passenger seat smoking, satellite radio, an outlet with 115 volts and a chilled glove compartment. Options include a 3rd row seat, navigation system with rearview camera, DVD entertainment, integrated booster seats for children, power sunroof, and Sirius satellite TV. It brought the total to $ 35,560.

Travel can be loaded with an impressive set of features for comfort and convenience, but we found that competition dragged on some important areas, namely, fuel economy and completion of the cabin. During our 355-miles, mainly to test the site, we have miles per gallon on average only 14.7. In an essay of 2009, R / T, but we added an average of 17.8 mpg with more highway miles to the mix. The EPA figures for the V6 engine driving 15/23 city / highway mpg. The four-cylinder models had better go and get 19/25 city / highway mpg, but we have very little power trip with 4 cylinders and if it is a duty, the V6 is your only option. Another disappointment is the car, ie, materials and decoration subpar monotonous. A liberal use of hard plastic provides a low cost vision and budget are more inside. Leather helps improve the environment factor, but it will cost.

Current trip, where competition is, however, with its multitude of properties of the family-friendly. With a list of options for traveling in a living room turning on the wheels, karting is a family and all their luggage comfortably more than feasible. Features such as voyage under the plant and security silos, built in booster seats for children, and options for satellite and terrestrial TV should earn a place in the shopping list of busy families.

We have these functions more closely in the following pages.

Alfa Romeo: back in the US

It seems Alfa Romeo finally will return to the U.S. in two years, bringing with it several cars that would compete with BMW and Volkswagen's Audi brand. Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of Fiat and Chrysler, said recently in a speech that he's increasingly confident that the struggling brand will be able to produce cars that are accepted globally, including in the U.S.

2010 Alfa Romeo
Alfa Romeo has been owned by Fiat since 1986. The brand was last sold here in 1995, ending its presence in the U.S. after years of declining quality and slow sales. An alliance with General Motors in the 1990s resulted in a planned return of the brand in 2003, but it never materialized and the partnership has since dissolved.

If the brand does return by 2012 as Marchionne said, Alfa Romeo's lineup of cars could be expanded, using platforms (the chassis, suspension and other key components on the underside of the body) now on Fiat and Chrysler cars. Chrysler and Italy's Fiat SpA formed an alliance after Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy in June 2009, giving Fiat a 20 percent controlling stake in Chrysler.

Among the new cars expected is a front-wheel-drive vehicle, called the Giulia that would replace the Alfa Romeo 159, which is currently sold only in Europe. The Giulia would be offered as a midsize sedan and a station wagon. The cars, built on Fiat-Chrysler platforms, would likely be manufactured in the U.S., beginning in mid-2012, according to reports by the industry magazine Automotive News. Introduced in 2005, the Alfa Romeo 159 is a compact sedan that comes with standard all-wheel drive and competes with the BMW 3 Series cars, which start at $33,150. Its 3.2-liter V-6 engine, which produces 260 horsepower, would most likely be used in the U.S. model.

A future, full-size sedan would likely be built on the Chrysler 300C platform. It would be considered the replacement for the Alfa Romeo 166, which was discontinued in 2007. Like the 300C, the Alfa Romeo full-size sedan would be a rear-wheel-drive car. It would likely be sold in the U.S. beginning in 2013.

The next year will be a telling one for the future of Alfa Romeo in the U.S., and as a brand in general. Fiat's plan to return the brand to the U.S. could be helped immensely by its Chrysler partnership, improving Alfa Romeo's technology, manufacturing and dealer infrastructure. But to become a competitor of BMW and Audi in the U.S. as well as Europe, it needs to be more successful as a brand.

Much of that success is riding on the launch of its newest model, the Giulietta, a five-door hatchback being introduced next month at the Geneva Motor Show. It will compete with the Volkswagen Golf, which starts at $17,620. The company is expecting to use the model to nearly double its annual sales, with plans to sell about 100,000 Giuliettas annually. If that happens, Fiat will be in a much better position to bring its Alfa Romeo brand back to U.S. soil.

Repossessed' car, a mix-up or your fault?

Dear Driving for Dollars,
Six weeks ago, I signed a contract for a car. Five days later, I went back to the dealership and told them I couldn't afford it. I returned the car and the dealer gave me back my trade-in. Now they just came and took away my car. Is that allowed?
-- Trish

a_v2.gifDear Trish,
A case of buyer's remorse with the dealer allowing you to simply return the car with no financial outlay is unusual. But if that is what happened, it sounds like there's been a major mix-up. Do you have any paperwork that says the contract has been voided or canceled? Or is there something that says you returned the new car and received your old car back, free and clear? Getting things in writing is absolutely critical in situations of buyer's remorse.

Carefully look over all your paperwork, including your original contract, for something that indicates you owe a specific amount. There may be a clause or condition in your original contract that outlines what happens in cases of buyer's remorse. It is also possible that you still owe money to the dealer since it may be forced to sell the returned car at a reduced rate. Still, the dealership should have made that clear in writing and verbally when you returned the car.

Call the company that repossessed your car and ask its agents who gave the order (the dealer or the lender), then call that company and explain the situation, speaking to a manager. If your paperwork indicates you owe money, see if you can pay it right away and get your car back. If your paperwork does not indicate that you owe money, then speak to a manager at the repossession company to try to stop the sale of your car. Also, call the dealership to persuade management to release the car back to you. If you don't find satisfaction, contact your state's attorney general and file a complaint.

Pros :Good looking great drive

Cons :questionable low mileage

Description :I have purchased the Beat PS and was assured of a good mileage around 15 kms, on city roads (Bangalore) and around 18 on long drivers, however I find that i am not getting mileage more than 8-9 kms on city roads. i thought initially this was due to the tuning upto 1000kms. I hear that is not the case, however, i am asked to continue to drive, and see, i am not sure, i hope things improve. I would be hugely disappointed and it would not be worth the cost, if am going to get anything less than 14 kms on city roads.
